Last week I took the tiny plane from Shetland Mainland to Fair Isle, to speak to and interview a variety of knitters there. Fair Isle is located between Shetland and Orkney and has a population of roughly 55.

As a recent article in The Times suggests, knitting is an important factor in the social and economic life of this unique place. Links to a whole range of Fair Isle knit producers can be found on the Fair Isle Bird Observatory website.

I was extremely lucky to be able to visit such interesting and hospitable people. Many thanks to them. Lots to process now!
